The regulation of global data flows has emerged as a critical issue at the intersection of international trade, security policy, and technological innovation. Data constitutes not only a vital economic resource but also a key strategic asset – increasingly viewed through the lenses of systemic rivalry, national security, and digital sovereignty. In this context, the traditional paradigm of the free flow of data is being reconsidered worldwide. Democratic societies must strike a careful balance: safeguarding open digital markets while ensuring the protection of sensitive information and maintaining strategic autonomy. Against this backdrop, we are pleased to invite you to the hybrid conference "Data Import and Export Control: The (Future) Regulation of Global Data Flows", convening leading experts from government, industry, and academia to address: Recent developments in international and national data transfer regulations;Economic, legal, and security-related risks associated with outbound data flows;Potential frameworks for a future European external data trade regime;Comparative perspectives from the United States, Asia, and other key jurisdictions;The broader geopolitical implications of data governance strategies. The conference will provide a platform for in-depth analysis and interdisciplinary dialogue on how to design robust, future-oriented policies that preserve competitiveness and security without unduly restricting digital trade. ILR Retreat 2026

Das Institut für Lebensmittel- und Ressourcenökonomik (ILR) hat in den vergangenen Jahren durch neue Arbeitsgruppen, Professuren und Forschungsprojekte deutlich an Größe und thematischer Vielfalt gewonnen. Mit der Beteiligung an mehreren Sonderforschungsbereichen und der Entwicklung weiterer Projekte eröffnen sich neue Zukunftsperspektiven für die Forschung und die internationale Sichtbarkeit des Instituts. Um die wachsende Komplexität und Interdisziplinarität erfolgreich zu gestalten, steht beim Retreat die enge Abstimmung und Zusammenarbeit im Mittelpunkt. Ziel ist es, Synergien in Forschung und Lehre besser zu nutzen, etwa durch gemeinsame Publikationen und die effiziente Verwendung institutsinterner Ressourcen. Darüber hinaus sollen strategische Weichen für die zukünftige Ausrichtung des Instituts gestellt werden. Das Retreat bietet zugleich Raum für den persönlichen Austausch sowie die Entwicklung und Stärkung des Gemeinschaftsgefühls. --- In recent years, the Institute for Food and Resource Economics (ILR) has expanded through new research groups, professorships, and projects. With our involvement in several collaborative research centers and the launch of further initiatives, we are opening up exciting future perspectives for our research activities and our international visibility. At the retreat, we focus on close coordination and collaboration to manage growing complexity and interdisciplinarity. We aim to make better use of synergies in research and teaching, from joint publications to the effective use of shared resources. Together, we will set strategic directions for the institute’s future and create space for personal exchange, strengthening our sense of community, and fresh ideas.
