Drawing on philosophical theories of epistemology, the lecture presents a conceptual framework for knowledge in animals and machines. Guest speaker Prof. Laurie Paul (Yale) uses this framework to develop a new concept of LLM knowledge and to propose a taxonomy of knowledge that spans both biological and artificial categories—from C. elegans to LLMs. This approach provides the basis for a precise account of how knowledge can be realized in both animals and machines, while also taking into consideration the different biological and physical sources of this knowledge.
